I Would Live In Your Love - Sara Teasdale

I would live in your love as the sea-grasses live in the sea, Borne up by each wave as it passes, drawn down by each wave that recedes; I would empty my soul of the dreams that have gathered in me, I would beat with your heart as it beats, I would follow your soul as it leads.

---

When I used this poem as part of a set of music compositions, I was incredibly young and naive, a hopeless romantic even. Life and love have come and gone and come again with more love and excitement than the 21-year-old me could have ever imagined. Teasdale's poetry allowed me a voice when my words were still often backward and mangled. When I wrote the compositions, I wanted to express the desires I had for a healthy marriage and my brand new baby boy. I wanted a love that engulfed of my entire world. I would be a Music Education Major and someday a priest.

The music of my composition swayed as the very sea-grasses of Teasdale's sea. The music, a simple setting for piano, cello, and voice ebbed and flowed, filling with a rich, full, warm sound. Then something happened. Those pieces, in the storm of life, were lost for many years. Pain and heartache came, my voice fell silent, my soul was dreamless, my heart had lost its lead. That baby boy is a young adult finding his own ebb and flow of life. It seems like a long time.

I have spoken often of a spark in other commentaries. In 2017, I found, deep within me a spark of me who was lost. I adjusted my sails and created a new chapter. It was scary. In 2018, that spark grew and I remembered a girl once proudly accepting leadership pins and ribbons. Now, stepping back, I can give regard to the big picture. The ebb and flow of life the sway of the sea-grasses, the passing waves borne and reborn, dreams gathered, and re-gathered. The very beat of the heart draws us back to the living if we only choose to live.

Teasdale's words are more relevant to me now than ever before. As teachers and leaders, we have lived in the seas of change. The cyclical trends and fads of education, the rise of our self-worth, receding pain, and yet we rise again. And, as we rise again, we rise higher. Our souls beat for the children who have gone through our homes and classrooms, every single one of them. Our hearts beat and now, our souls must lead.

We are teachers and leaders. We cannot be strong every single day but, we can find our crew, our PLN, our kindred spirits who will face the ebb and flow with us, together. We are teachers and leaders. We will respect and trust one another to bring our unique gifts and talents to our schools, our communities, and our students. We are teachers and leaders. We lead with love and determination to reach #EachAndEveryChild! We are teachers and leaders. We will find our #OneWord2019. We are teachers and leaders. We will inhale determination and exhale excitement!

Much Love and Prayers for an Amazing 2019.
